Thinking about church…

Dicker

Here’s something for all you theologisers out there! What are your thoughts on this?

A healthy church is a gathering where everyone gets what they don’t want.

What I mean by that is, church should not be be tailored to everyone’s liking. There should be hymns for people who don’t like hymns, kid’s talks for people who don’t like kid’s talks, long prayer times for people who don’t like long prayers and vis versa… There should be people and personalities there that don’t naturally connect – this is a healthy church.

Discuss.

I agree…a healthy church is one where people realise that we are all different and also realising ultimately that we go to church to serve God and serve the church family. When we walk into the building where we meet as a church, our motivation should not be what we want but how can we serve others!
In saying that, eventually what we want should come up to unless it’s directly contradictory to the teachings of Jesus!

I do enjoy the fact that I know quite a few people purely because we’re both followers of Jesus. If it wasn’t for church, we’d never have met, or realise that we may actually have other things in common.

I think that church services should be varied, and contain ‘features’ for a wide variety of personalities and tastes, but that sometimes this ‘varied diet’ can make it hard to string them all together into one service without being really long, or really disjointed.

I really like a lot of different types of food, but I don’t necessarily want them all to be served in the same meal. Having said that, I’d get bored of eating the same food for every meal, every day, no matter how much I enjoy it at first.

I think that church should be a lifestyle thing, where you have certain events and certain types of activites that cater to a wide variety of people, but that you make yourself engage across this spectrum, so that you don’t pick and choose only the aspects that you (think you’ll) enjoy.

I guess that means I’m in it for the long haul, not just the short term.

I think this is why I hate churches like Hillsong. Every week is the same and every week you do feel uplifted, but it is shallow happiness and you don’t really learn from it. You don’t go to church to “feel good”, you go to learn and grow and praise the Lord.
If you get too comfortable in church, you can forget why you go in the first place.
