Computer

Peter

So my current desktop is getting rather tired. It makes a horrible loud whirring noise constantly as the fan works overtime trying to keep everything cool, and is getting slower every day (or at least that’s how it feels). I think it might be time to start thinking about a replacement computer, but it’s a hard decision…

I use it mainly for the interwebs / uni work / watching movies, so I like having a fairly big screen, which makes me think that a desktop might be my best option. I love the idea of a laptop, but realistically I don’t need that portability very often, and from what I can tell you get more ‘bang for buck’ with desktops?

I’m excited by the idea of going Mac, but I’m still very wary of whether various programs would work and if I’d need to install two operating systems etc. Just the words ‘Mac Book Pro’ make me smile though, so I know what my heart is saying.

Then there’s the factor of cost. Although I’m finally earning a wage after quite a long time of being a student etc, I’ve managed to rack up some bills in that time, so I’m currently working hard to pay all of that off. I also want to look at getting a slightly larger car at some stage, so don’t want to go crazynuts on computers when I’m still financially recovering (that sounds slightly ‘GFC’, doesn’t it?).

With those factors in mind, what do people suggest? Where do I shop? Which models should I consider?
I’m still technically a uni student for another 12 months, so will that benefit me in cost at all?

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.

Another Youtube clip…

Chris

I watched Dicker’s last post with the Arj Barker clips and then cliked on some of the other ones that come up at the end and got to the following one, I remember seeing it before and it still impresses me…

Arj Barker rockin my world

Dicker

I’ve got right into Arj barker ever since I saw him do this piece at the comedy gala festival in Melbourne last year.

I’m still laughing!

And this one from this year

Why Bother?

Dicker

Drove past a fashion shop in Earlwood the other day called “Wot’z Hot“… and I’ve gotta ask: why bother with an apostrophe when there is obviously no concern for correct spelling anywhere else in the title?

Thankyou. that is all.

Looking Ahead

Chris

Next week I’m off to Melbourne again for 2 days next week, if it’s like the first time I won’t get a night in Sydney unfortunately. But I do plan on going to the casino again and this time and eating myself a metre long sausage… (I’m scared it might be disappointing, but I hope not…)

I also want to go to go where Howie went, like these buildings (not fugly square, but the building that you look down on fugly square from), where they have viewing platforms and the like …

Then on the 30th I’ve been called up for jury duty, again I hope I’m picked, or at least get to go along for the selection process to check it out.

Then on the October long weekend I’m off to the Spur conference run by the MTS guys…

Fun Times.

Just a quick note to let you know…

Parkes

Chris

I got up a little earlier yesterday to drive to Parkes, about an hour and 20 mins, to follow one of the guys from work who was selling a car down there. I was going to do the finance side of things and then give him a lift back.

After being delayed a little bit we finally hit the road.

First I had to stop about half way to drop a parcel off to a shop in one of the small towns, I stopped in and they said they had never heard of the person I was dropping it in for. I then went to another similar shop in case I had misunderstood the directions given to me, but they had no idea either. So having no phone reception I continued on to Parkes.

Then I get to Parkes and find that cause we were running late we had to wait about 45mins until the customer could see us as they now had a client with them.

So we went for a coffee, I had a hot chocolate cause I’m not all grown up and that yet.

It was the WORST hot chocolate I have ever had, it looked the right colour under the froth on top, so all looked the part, but it had no chocolate taste what so ever!!

I vow not to return there.

So at this point I also find out that it looks like we won’t be selling the car today, yadda yadda yadda, boring… and slightly disappointing.

In the meantime I had contacted the boss man and found out where the package was to go so that we could do it on the way back, he called ahead and all was good this time, I stopped in, spoke to the same person, and now they knew what I was on about… nice work little town lady.

So I got into work at 12.30, then at 1.00 went to get some lunch after a hard morning.

That’s about it really, it was nice getting in half way through the day, although I found it hard to find motivation for the rest of it.

District 9

Dicker

James and I went to the movies last night and saw District 9.

It’s an Alien flick but it’s not like any alien flick you’ve seen! It really is different and also brilliant! What I particularly like was the subtle satire of all the big american end of the world alien movies like independence day etc… An alien space craft that looks very similar to that of independence day settles not over Washington or New York, but over Johannesburg South Africa… And the aliens, far from being hostile overlords, are vulnerable refugees (which is why I guess they picked the continent of Africa…)

I think there are some intentional parallels drawn with the apartheid in SA and some of the current refugee issues on that continent, certainly there’s a stab at the Nigerian scammers.

It’s a bit “Hot Fuzz” is structure, with a slower moving first half and then some very fast moving bloody action for the second. It’s bloody, but not too hard to handle… a few bodies exploding and the occasional head and limb torn off… you know, Shaun of the Dead style.

Anyway, I liked it. Worth the money to see at the cinema or at least a must DVD rental.

The Men Who Stare at Goats

Chris

Here’s a movie trailer for you, at first it looked a little, cheap old laughs, but by the end I thought it was funny and want to see it.

Jeep Update

Chris

jeepThought it was time for another Jeep update…

Things are moving along in leaps and bounds now, well it doesn’t really look like it, but the momentum has certainly picked up again after a couple of months of slowness due to financial constrictions.

The picture isn’t quite the latest but as you can see we’ve set up a bit of a spray booth in the garage and now we’re close to having the chassis finished.

Next we’ll give the diffs a quick spray, we have the new shocks and couple of other things ordered so then we’ll fit those and then start rebuilding it.

I think we’ll drop the motor back in, but then leave it alone and concentrate on getting the body finished off, before we attached that, re-wire the whole thing, put the jigsaw back together and drive it out of the garage…

How hard could the be?!
