Mays lane retrospective

Thursday is now my day off and Fi and I have made a habit of using the time to become more “cultured”…

Last Thursday we went to see the archibalds (excellent) and today we went and saw the Mays Lane Retrospective at the carriage works in Redfern.

2 things…

Firstly the Carriage works are brilliant!! It’s one of those old industrial spaces that they’ve (I assume NSW govt or Sydney council…?) transformed into a brilliant art space. It also houses the studio that they use to film “So you think you can dance”, and is complete with a cafe space and free internet… me thinks it’ll be a nice work space on occasion.

Secondly the Mays lane exhibition is inspirational. Mays lane is in St Peters (near Enmore) and is used as a legal graffiti zone, and from time to time international and renown graffiti artists are invited to come and paint in the lane. They put up some large wooden panels in the lane and the artist paint the panels (as well as the walls) and the panels are kept by a curator for exhibition, ergo, visa vis, hey presto… the Mays Lane Retrospective exhibition.

I say get down there!

As a side note for Vanessa… the Anna Swartz Gallery (a permanent gallery within the carriage works) currently have an exhibition of artist Yin Xiuzhen, who does artworks I think you’d really enjoy, BUT… the exhibition finishes this Saturday… 2 days…
