The affordable big breakfast lives on in the inner west!
The inner west of Sydney has many great things going for it (apart from the fact that I live and go to church there), not least of which is it’s great cafes, however… someone seems to have created the equation that with great quality must come great price.
It has been sometime sice I’ve found a real bargain when it come to great food in a great cafe. The Camperdown cafe on Camperdown park has my favourite “camperdown breakfast sandwich” (which is a mouthful to say and eat); Cinqe cafe in Newtown has the best openning hours, chai tea, and nice atmosphere; Deus cafe has got the motorbikes; Sweet Belem in Petersham has got the best pastries; and the last drop cafe in Dulwich Hill is just close and handy for a new study area…
Not since the early year of my sprinkler fitter apprenticeship have I seen a Big Breakfast for $6.50 that couldn’t be finished (admittedly it was from a dingy takeaway food joint in Smithfield), and not for years have I seen a decent Big Breagfast for under $12.50 anywhere in Sydney, But… the affordable-more-bang-for-your-buck Big Breakfast lives on in the inner west!!!!
This morning Fi and I came upon the Funky Monkey cafe in Enmore, and all my hopes and dreams were realised. The Big breakfast is $10.00 and is big enough to block your arteries after 3 mouth fulls. the coffee and hoit chocolate only $2.50 each, and it’s all goooood! The decor of the place is smooth and relaxing, the staff are loveable, and when I ordered my Big Breakfast the waitress offered me tomato sauce without me even having to ask (!). It was soooo exciting!
My only fear is that they’ve only been open for a month, and maybe not enough people know about the place, so maybe they won’t stay open for long (ahhhhhh). But I’m determimned that they should get good patronige and stay open. Good food and good service and good prices deserve reward. It’d be sad to see this place close while all the other expensive places stayed open charging upwards of $12.50 for an anorexic sausage, a drizzle of bacon, one fat bit of toast and a miniature egg and only tomato sauce on request! Where’s the justice then?
We must eat at the Funky Monkey for justice requires it to be!! Hoorah!

If there was some way to manipulate time, I’d suggest we go there before paintball tomorrow… failing that, it’ll have to be VERY soon…
