Youth Group Camp

Dicker

soc_header.jpg

Heading off to our very first Salt Youth Group camp tomorrow evening for a Thursday nighter to Sunday arvo extravaganza!

Looking forward to it. It’s the first camp I’ve organised and run, which feels remarkably different to organising the several beach missions I’ve done over past years… Graham Stanton is going to be speaking at our camp, and I think it’ll be a cracker. We’ve got 125 acres to play in down near Mittagong way so there should be no shortage of space. And we have a 60 seater Mercedes Benz coach taking us all down there tomorrow night courtesy of Matt Nutt and Hawksford coaches – way to go!!

Got a bit to take down. Hope I don’t forget anything… mmmm.

My next vehicle…

Peter

The lads from Top Gear have done Toyota a massive marketing favour, by attempting to destroy an ‘unbreakable’ Hilux.

Whatever their motives, it worked on me, and my desire for one of these utes has skyrocketed. I love the idea of just slinging my stuff into the tray and driving off for a weekend on the coast or something. I’m sure it’s highly impractical, and I could come up with a dozen reasons with it’s ridiculous, but that’s what I’m like sometimes.

Do you think I could get away with trading in the Astra?

(I couldn’t embed the video, so a link will have to suffice)

…why, oh why, oh why…

Peter

… is it that whenever I have to do something, I find myself procrastinating furiously, and making myself incredibly stressed in the process?

I’m meant to be writing a study for tonight, and also researching / writing an assignment for college, but instead I’m writing emails, ‘surfing the interweb’ (hardcore guy that I am), and thinking about anything but the things I should be thinking about.

OK, I’m going to the post office (my new Ed Vedder record + t-shirt are finally here), then to the mall to get a charger for my new phone, and then I’ll come back and do some serious work…

Unless I can figure out something else to do.

[edit]

The Ed  Vedder record still hasn’t arrived (thank you Pearl Jam website, thank you – I’m really glad I pre-ordered now), but instead I found my X-Box waiting for me at the post office. I was skeptical as  to whether they would have actually repaired it, but I tried a few games and it seems  to work fine – thank you Microsoft!

The only confusing thing is that they also included an invoice for $120, but I was under the impression this was a warranty job… oh well… I won’t pay it, and we’ll see if they chase  me.

Seu Jorge: The Life Aquatic soundtrack

Dicker

seu_jorge.jpgBought this soundtrack last night at Fish Records in Newtown and I love it.

You can’t deny the quirkyness of this album, who would think to cover David Bowie songs in Portugese with acoustic guitar??

I loved the movie, and this soundtrack is equally fantastic. Jorge’s voice is awesome, and mixed with the sound of his guitar playing is like chocolate for your ears, mmmm….

Australian Idioms

Dicker

Couldn’t help but feel a great sense of joy today upon using the Australianism “the duck’s nuts” duck.gifto describe how good something was – i think i was thinking of a particular motorbike…

Anyway, it’s a great term. Got me wondering why the duck’s nuts are so cool…?

A couple of things…

Dicker

So there has been some things happening lately worth blogging about.

Firstly, a couple of weeks ago Pete put together a crack team of trivia experts to contest in the Caringbah Baptist trivia night fundraiser on October 20th (I somehow found my way onto this team of experts – and I was flattered Pete). But really the whole trivia night was an anti climax… It was more fundraiser than it was trivia with only 4 rounds of trivia and a very limited range of questions which either weren’t terribly difficult or were answered by the MC as he asked the question!!!? Really it was a waste of our talent. I made my contribution by knowing the theme of “the land of the giants” TV show that I watched when i was a kid, and that was about the extent of my valuable input… The team performed well, but alas we somehow managed to come only third, and we headed off to Pete’s place looking to fill that trivia shaped void with a couple of games of bolderdash. It did the trick.

Secondly, last week our alternator on the liberty crapped itself. It would have cost like $400 or something, but some good bargaining and initiative by Fi got us a replacement second hand one for a $180. Niiiice! All was good until the follow Thursday (last Thursday that is) when the new alternator crapped itself at Beverly Hills as Fi and I were driving over to my parent’s for dinner…Fortunatley enough, we got a free tow from the NRMA back to Petersham Service station (where the initial repair was done), I was able to ride my bike back to Mortdale to make dinner within the hour, and the car was fixed the next day under warranty. Woohoo!!

There you go. Some stuff does happen in my life.

I heard someone say the other day that life is punctuated by tragedy. That without tragedy our lives would be boringly predictable day after day. I can’t remember who said it, but they even went as far to say that we look for tragedy in our lives to make it interesting. Now that’s saying something! And I guess it’s kinda true. That’s the reason why so many people slow down on motorways to watch emergency services at car accidents that are on the other side of the road. People are looking for punctuation, something different, something out of the ordinary to happen in their lives – whether good or bad.

Could be true… or not…
