A couple of things…

Dicker

So there has been some things happening lately worth blogging about.

Firstly, a couple of weeks ago Pete put together a crack team of trivia experts to contest in the Caringbah Baptist trivia night fundraiser on October 20th (I somehow found my way onto this team of experts – and I was flattered Pete). But really the whole trivia night was an anti climax… It was more fundraiser than it was trivia with only 4 rounds of trivia and a very limited range of questions which either weren’t terribly difficult or were answered by the MC as he asked the question!!!? Really it was a waste of our talent. I made my contribution by knowing the theme of “the land of the giants” TV show that I watched when i was a kid, and that was about the extent of my valuable input… The team performed well, but alas we somehow managed to come only third, and we headed off to Pete’s place looking to fill that trivia shaped void with a couple of games of bolderdash. It did the trick.

Secondly, last week our alternator on the liberty crapped itself. It would have cost like $400 or something, but some good bargaining and initiative by Fi got us a replacement second hand one for a $180. Niiiice! All was good until the follow Thursday (last Thursday that is) when the new alternator crapped itself at Beverly Hills as Fi and I were driving over to my parent’s for dinner…Fortunatley enough, we got a free tow from the NRMA back to Petersham Service station (where the initial repair was done), I was able to ride my bike back to Mortdale to make dinner within the hour, and the car was fixed the next day under warranty. Woohoo!!

There you go. Some stuff does happen in my life.

I heard someone say the other day that life is punctuated by tragedy. That without tragedy our lives would be boringly predictable day after day. I can’t remember who said it, but they even went as far to say that we look for tragedy in our lives to make it interesting. Now that’s saying something! And I guess it’s kinda true. That’s the reason why so many people slow down on motorways to watch emergency services at car accidents that are on the other side of the road. People are looking for punctuation, something different, something out of the ordinary to happen in their lives – whether good or bad.

Could be true… or not…

I’m a huge fan of the NRMA, in the last couple of years I’ve had to call on them a few times, and even been towed twice by them, for free!

Someone may comment on the fact that I pay membership fees and therefore am technically paying for the service, but I figure if I keep up my average of a tow a year and a couple of call outs then I stay in front!

So I was really here to comment on your last paragraph, about life being punctuated by tragedy and that making life interesting. Something struck me about this. I was thinking that yeah it might be kinda half true, or one of many things that bring interest into our lives, but I think I you hit the nail on the head here…

I’m a bit of a bandit for slowing down when i see flashing lights (I try to make it look like I’m not rubber-necking but rather ‘being safe’, I also whinge when others do it and slow me down) but it is also the good things in life that make me rubber-neck.

So, as I write I basically see that I have said that anything which is out of the ordinary transforms a boring and predictable day into something interesting… but that sounds stupid, and is like saying… anything which isn’t the same old boring stuff makes things not boring…

But I was moved before I tried to comment on it…

This is the problem with blogging… sometimes ideas just don’t sound that good when they’re written down, and are probably more satisfying just as ideas…

I do see what you mean though. I would think in general that people would much prefer good punctuations in life rather than bad. However, it is probably through the bad times that we grow more in maturity and godliness. Extended periods of “good” times probably intrench more of the worldly self-relient arrogance and security that leads to more problems…

Why do people watch violent / scary films?

Why do people enjoy watching ‘blood sports’?

Why do people watch ‘Funniest Home Videos’ and wait for the inevitable groin strike?

I remember hearing something about the ‘fall of man’, but I don’t believe it…
